Mapping Women Land Rights in India

Description of Project: The World Bank Group along with the IMF and multilateral development banks are working together to support this post-2015 development agenda i.e. SDGs. Suggested SDG Indicators arranged by UN OWG (Open Working Group) Goals, delineates monitoring indicator for women land rights in Indicator 5 under Goal 1. With the support of The World Bank, New Delhi, NRMC India has piloted a study to assess the status of women land rights in India to see and draw a baseline of gender land rights in line with Bank’s ongoing initiative of developing 11 Country-at-a-glance notes to provide an initial picture of the implications of the post-2015 agenda at the country.

As part of the project, CLG had undertaken the following assignments.

  • Carry out an assessment of women land rights in India and develop benchmark for 2010-111 using the Agriculture Census data of Government of India. This will include development of state-wise and district-wise tables and Maps of India around the followings

  • Land ownership and the land area owned by women and ST women

  • Change in number of Holdings and area

  • Broad analysis of the comparative status and development of a Policy Brief for better appreciation of the situation and to trigger actions for enhanced women rights

  • Development of a Framework for Monitoring, based on the data management process to enable periodic monitoring by states
