Decoding community stewardship: Measuring care knowledge and agency

Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) steward at least 32% of the world’s land and inland waters, including 36% of Key Biodiversity Areas, drawing on deep-rooted knowledge systems, an ethic of care, and agency to sustain biodiversity and community well-being. In response to the limitations of top-down climate and conservation finance—much of which fails to reach IPLCs directly and can undermine local stewardship—Landstack and FES have developed and piloted a Stewardship Assessment Toolkit to measure how care, knowledge, and agency translate into socio-ecological resilience.

Building on these insights and the global momentum for stronger IPLC recognition, including support for a proposed Community Stewardship Fund, the webinar “Decoding Community Stewardship: Measuring Care, Knowledge and Agency” will reflect on practice, share learnings, and explore equitable financing pathways for long-term, community-led conservation.
