The Outcome:

The revised Theory of Change moves beyond seeing land merely as an asset. It positions secure land rights as the foundation for multidimensional empowerment, leading to:

  • Increased economic independence and access to government schemes.

  • Enhanced decision-making power within families and communities.

  • Greater participation in climate resilience and sustainable land management.

  • Strengthened social status, dignity, and security for women.

By developing this comprehensive framework, Landstack has helped create a clear, actionable roadmap for the "Land for Women" program, ensuring every initiative contributes to a larger, sustainable vision of gender equality and justice.

Landstack was entrusted by Womanity to develop and refine the Theory of Change (ToC) for its impactful "Land for Women" program in India. This strategic framework serves as the program's blueprint, guiding its mission to empower rural women through secure land rights.

Our Challenge:
While India has progressive laws, deep-rooted social norms and systemic barriers often prevent women from claiming their legal rights to land. The initial ToC needed to evolve beyond securing legal titles to address the complex realities of women's lives, including climate change, economic resilience, and social empowerment.

Landstack's Approach:

We partnered with Womanity to analyze three years of on-ground learnings and sector expertise to build a robust, evidence-based Theory of Change. This refined framework is built on three interconnected pillars:

  1. On-Ground Intervention: Supporting NGO partners to help women claim rights and use land for climate-resilient livelihoods.

  2. Ecosystem Building: Creating resources and training to empower a wider network of organizations and government bodies to support women's land rights effectively.

  3. Narrative Change: Shifting mindsets within communities and the development sector to recognize women as rightful landowners and vital climate leaders.
